START YOUR OWN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INTERVENTION AGENCY

Posted by: entreed on: November 16, 2008

I have received numerous emails inquiring about how to start a domestic violence intervention agency. Many woman were inspired by watching NeNe Leakes of the Real Housewives of Atlanta start the Twisted Hearts Foundation. I was able to do a little research and have some statistical information along with resources for people interested in starting their very own organization.

Here a some startling statistics:

  • Every 7 seconds a woman is beaten is the United States
  • 1 out of 4 woman are abused by an intimate partner
  • 2 – 4 million woman per year are victims of domestic violence
  • Every year approximately 4,000 woman are killed as a result of domestic violence
  • 30,000 ER visits and 40,000 physician visits per year are attributed to Domestic Violence
  • More than half of young men convicted of murder are incarcerated for killing their mother’s abuser

The statistics are clear that Domestic Violence cost our society far more than we can afford to pay. If you are an aspiring entrepreneur and compelled by the cause of domestic violence than a non profit agency may be for you. Non profit agencies are established with a purpose to provide social services without the focus of turning a profit. The agencies are funded by donations, grants, endowments and sometimes other charitable organizations. The US code classifies non profits as a 501(c)3 which bears tax exempt status.

I was too inspired by the show. I beling to a non profit organization and I do a lot of community service work, but I too was a victim of domestic violence and it came in the form of physical and verbal, it made me think he was the only one who had my back and I shoned away my friends because he actually made me think that I was nothing, and nobody wanted to be around me but him. I am reading, I have a name, platform, and I have a mission. Please help me with more information.

I am interested in getting in touch with the twisted hearts foundation for help do you have any information on how I do that?

Hi. I am a survivor of domestic violence. Over the years of recovery, I have written and performed many spoken word pieces about the subject. If you have an organization that is is need of written or spoken pieces, please email me @ alphavalencia@comcast.net. If you are an individual in the midst of violence or in need of a listener as you make your transitions, you may email as well. It helps…it really helps…

Blessings,

V

Hello Mrs. Leaks. First I would like to say I am so proud of you. You are doing something that will not only help you heal your old wonds but to help someone else in the prosess. I personally have not been in domestic violence but I was a child reased in a home of domestic violence. Children are affected by all the fighting, yelling, child molestation, and the fear that come with living with an abuser. I hope that I can be like you and help others. Continue to do well. I do not have to tell you to stay true to yourself because Mrs. Leaks will do her! lol. I love you NeNe. May God bless you & your family.

I currently facilitate Batterer’s Intervention Program Groups for Domestic Violence Offenders in Lake and Porter Counties, in Indiana. I am a member of the BIP Committee of the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence which sets standards for facilitators and the conduct of groups. I was recently asked to provide a workshop to a public audience by a freind and his wife who head a not-for-profit organization in Gary, IN. I put together a two-and-a-half to three hour presentation I named “Portrait of Domestic Violence”. The goal of the presentation is to teach the public that batterers choose violence to gain power and control, understand why batterers batter, understand what battering is not caused by, and to be able to identify what a batterer needs. I did not plan any other outcomes other than the ones previouly mentioned.

An unexpected outcome was that one of the participants of the workshop approached me after the presentation and began to share her story and experiences with me. I am not accustomed to working directly with victims, and according to our standards, I am bound to offer referral support to victim’s advocates, which I did. The striking thing in all of this for me was the fact that as a result of the workshop, this particular victim, as she herself said, was able to have a real replay of her life and she couldn’t continue to hold on to denial as her means of escape from the problem, or the failed attempts she made in the past to get help. She said that the definitions and explanations provided in the workshop gave clarity to who her partner was in the marriage of some twenty plus years, who she was, and what both of their roles were. She acknowledged that she was willing to seek help from others with shared experiences to discover their triumphs and successes that she might learn how to go forward in life and live.

I have not had an opportunity to do a similar presentation since the intial one on August 25th of this year. I am curious to know if given a similar audience could the same initial unexpected results occur.

God Bless ………………….. very interested in bringing this to my community.

Bravo! I give you an applause for stepping out and doing something positive. You are proof that not only can you love again, but you deserve to be loved, but you have to first love yourself in order to be able to receive love. NeNe your fabulous. How can we send donations?
